Wednesday, April 17, 2013

The Meteor Crater Field Trip will take place on Wednesday 17 April 2013.

Cost, per person: $30

Meteor Crater (www.meteorcrater.com) is a meteorite impact crater approximately 43 miles east of Flagstaff, near Winslow in the northern Arizona desert.  This is the world’s best preserved meteorite impact site where an asteroid traveling at 26,000 miles per hour impacted planet Earth approximately 50,000 years ago.

Today, Meteor Crater is nearly one mile across, 2.4 miles in circumference and more than 550 feet deep. It is an international tourist venue with outdoor observation trails, air conditioned indoor viewing, wide screen movie theater, interactive discovery center, unique gift and rock shop, and Astronaut Memorial Park at the modern Visitor Center located on the crater rim.

Meteor Crater's "IMPACT The Mystery of Meteor Crater" movie, featuring exciting 3D modeling and animation, allows viewers to experience the thunderous sound and explosive fury of the meteor's super-heated trip through the Earth's atmosphere. The spectacular result of the collision that rocked the American Southwest with the energy of more than 20 million tons of TNT can be explored first-hand just outside the Visitor Center at Meteor Crater Arizona.

While at Meteor Crater, there are three tour options:

Option I:  Hike to the bottom of Meteor Crater
With this option, you will hike from the top of Meteor Crater to the bottom with Drew Barringer.  This option is for fit and prepared hikers with appropriate clothing and footwear.  The hike is steep and starts at 6,000 feet elevation.
Participant Limit: 50 people
Option 2: Hike along the rim of Meteor Crater
You will hike along the rim of Meteor Crater with Nadine Barlow.  Although this hike is less strenuous than hiking to the bottom of the crater, it is still rough terrain at 6,000 feet elevation.
Participant Limit: 50 people
Option 3:  Visit the Meteor Crater Interactive Discovery Center
With this option, you will have the opportunity to visit the Meteor Crater Interactive Discovery Center, which contains many exciting interactive displays and exhibits, making it the most extensive and informative museum its type on earth.    Visitors will relive the intensity of this impact 50,000 years ago when a fiery giant meteor mass weighing several hundred thousand tons hurtled through space and impacted the earth. The wide range of exhibits will fascinate and educate every person on the aspects of meteors and their encounters with the earth.

This option accommodates wheelchairs and people who cannot easily hike.

Pre-registration is required.  For Group I, the tour will depart the Drury Inn at 8:30 am and return at 12:30 pm.  Group II will depart at 1:00 pm from the Drury Inn and return at 5:00 pm.  Bring a hat, sunscreen, and sunglasses; consider wearing long sleeves and pants.  Please bring water and snacks.  It’s best to bring layered clothing, as temperatures are likely to be cool in the mornings and late afternoon but quite warm at midday.  Wear comfortable and appropriate footwear for walking (no sandals).
